Mission & Vision |

Our Mission
To inspire all
girls to be strong, smart, and bold.
Our Vision
To be recognized as the leading voice for all girls
and the issues they face. To create an environment of hope for all
girls, support for their families and to impact our community
through consistent education, proactive programming, and
research-based curricula that encourages all girls to achieve their
full potential.
Why Tulsa County?
A recent study conducted to assess
risk factors and behavioral trends in female youth in Oklahoma
revealed a climate in which the wellbeing and advancement of girls
in this state is jeopardized in alarming ways:
-
The
Oklahoma Suicide Prevention Resource Center recently disclosed that
girls attempted to commit 61 percent of all teen suicides in the
state.
-
Oklahoma has the eighth highest teen pregnancy rate in
the nation.
-
More than 20 percent of girls in
Oklahoma do not graduate from high school.
More statistics about women in
Oklahoma:
-
Women workers in Oklahoma earn 75 cents for every dollar garnered by
their male counterparts in the workplace.
-
Single women head almost half of all
households in Oklahoma that financially fall below the economic
poverty line.
-
Oklahoma imprisons women at the highest rate in the
nation; in fact, 1290 out of 100,000 Oklahoma women are currently
serving time behind bars.
-
Oklahoma is one of only six states
in which more than 10 percent of the prison population is
comprised of female inmates.
Girls Inc.® provides young
girls with outlets not only to express their individuality, but also
to take part in life-enriching experiences that may not be otherwise
available to them. We strive to assist
girls in the positive perception of their bodies and their beings though programs designed to educate
about issues such as
media literacy, economic literacy, adolescent pregnancy, sports and
self-defense. We prepare young women for
both citizenship and leadership in their respective communities by
acquainting them with their responsibility as active members of a
changing society. Girls Incorporated®
seeks to change Oklahoma's alarming statistics one girl at a time.
